When Can You Wear Makeup After Eye Surgery?

If you’ve recently undergone eye surgery, for example cataract surgery or laser vision correction, you might be wondering when it’s safe to get back to your makeup routine. While everyone’s recovery is unique and you should always check with your surgeon, here’s some general advice to help you navigate this delicate time and keep your eyes healthy.

The 1-Week Rule

After most eye surgeries, it’s typically recommended to avoid using eye makeup—including mascara, eyeliner, eyeshadow, and concealer—for about one week. This helps minimise the risk of infection and prevents pressure or contact with the healing eye.

Skincare Caution

You can usually continue your regular skincare routine, but be extra cautious around the eyelid area. The goal is to avoid products getting into your eye and to eliminate rubbing or pressure during the healing phase.

Eyelash Extensions

If you wear eyelash extensions, they’ll need to be removed at least a week before surgery. The good news? You can usually have them replaced about two weeks post-surgery.

Starting Fresh

When you’re ready to reintroduce makeup, starting fresh is essential. Old products can harbor bacteria, so it’s wise to replace them.

  • Mascara: Begin with a fresh tube, such as PRIORITEYES mascara by OKKIYO, specifically formulated for sensitive eyes.
  • Pencils & Crayons: Sharpen to remove the outer layer.
  • Brushes & Sponges: Clean these thoroughly before use.

Use Common Sense

Recovery isn’t a race—don’t rush into wearing makeup until you feel ready. Your healing process may vary, and common sense goes a long way in ensuring your eyes remain healthy.

Consult Your Surgeon

This is general advice, not specific medical guidance. Always discuss makeup use and your recovery timeline with your ophthalmologist during one of your consultations. They’ll provide personalised recommendations based on your surgery and risk factors.

By taking these precautions, you’ll protect your eyes and ensure they heal beautifully. Until then, a fresh, makeup-free face is the best look of all!
